My Top Keto Tips

think of it as a toolbox & make it your own

I have learnt to listen to my body. This has taken me some time as I had ignored it for so so long! I use intuition and common sense so I don’t tend to count or weigh.  In my mind, that is what puts me off most diets.

Foods to eat
…the ones I eat

  • Meat: Red meat, steak, ham, sausage, bacon, chicken and turkey.
  • Fatty fish: Such as salmon, trout, tuna and mackerel.
  • Free-range eggs
  • Grass-Fed Butter and full-fat cream:
  • Nice Cheese: Unprocessed -cheddar, goat, cream,  mozzarella
  • Nuts and seeds: Almonds, walnuts, flax seeds, pumpkin & chia seeds
  • Healthy “fruit” oils like extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, and avocado oil.
  • Avocados: Whole avocados or guacamole
  • Low-carb veggies: Most green veggies, tomatoes, onions, peppers, etc.
  • Salt, pepper and various healthy herbs and spices to taste
  • The odd piece of 80% dark chocolate

Avoid!!!
…red alert!

  • Sugary foods: soft drinks, fruit juice, smoothies, cake, ice cream, chocolate etc.
  • Grains or starches: Wheat-based products, rice, pasta, cereal, etc.
  • Fruit: All fruit, except some berries like strawberries & blueberries
  • Beans, Peas, kidney beans, lentils, chickpeas, etc.
  • Root vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, parsnips, etc.
  • Low-fat or diet products: usually high in carbs
  • Some condiments or sauces: These often contain sugar and unhealthy fat.
  • Processed vegetable oils, mayonnaise, etc.
  • Sugar-free diet foods: These are often high in “sugar alcohols”, and tend to be highly processed

My biggest advice is… don’t beat yourself up – we are human after all. There are days when I feel I have slipped into the dark side a little but I just start again the next day!

I am often asked about alcohol. Due to their carb content, many alcoholic beverages can throw you out of ketosis, I stay off beer, have the occasional glass of wine and  love spirits like bourbon and tequila (it makes me happy!).

And you can do this as a vegetarian or vegan, I recommend Dr. Will Coles’ book Ketotarian for reference.
